TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Prior to her graduate and undergraduate studies at Manhattan School of Music, Maia was primarily a choir singer and has a vast experience singing in choirs professionally.

 

Before her operatic training, the soprano studied piano for 8 years. She has achieved a score ranking Outstanding in Level VI NYSSMA for both voice and piano.

 

With extensive experience in NYSSMA Voice and Piano, Maia prepares her students for each section with an emphasis on sight reading. Students in her studio have consistently ranked Excellent and Outstanding in their festival evaluations. Maia’s voice students have gone on to participate in SCMEA, All County, and All State.  

 

The soprano can attest that studying piano has helped her immensely in her musical career, particularly in her vocal studies, and encourages her students to have at least a beginner’s proficiency in piano.

 

Maia has a love of jazz and musical theater repertoire and strongly believes that having a foundation in Classical technique is essential for singing all genres of music.  

During her training, she has had the privilege of studying with a multitude of professionals whom had mastered different schools of singing. This has strengthened her ability to discern the differences between each technical approach/ school and make adjustments to ensure her students are engaging in technique that will promote vocal health and longevity.

When teaching, though Maia's approach is technical, she makes sure to focus each lesson on her student's well-being, taking an organic approach to singing so that each student's needs are met.

 

Although Maia will focus on breath work, resonance, acting, music theory, ear training, and posture from an Alexander technique lens, Maia believes the most important thing is to have fun!
