TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Maia Gonzalez is a soprano, vocal instructor, and beginner-intermediate piano instructor with a rich background in choral and piano performance.
With her extensive musical background, Maia is well- versed in preparing students for NYSSMA festivals and has been doing so for 6+ years. Her students have consistently earned scores ranking "Excellent" and "Outstanding" on their evaluations and have gone on to participate in the All- County and All-State NYSSMA festivals.
When it comes to basics, the soprano believes that having a strong foundation in piano is invaluable for all musicians. Maia strongly encourages her voice students without a piano background to achieve a beginner’s proficiency and provides tools to achieve this.
In the beginning of her classical training, Maia grew a deep love and appreciation for jazz, pop, and musical theater. Through hers' and the experiences of her students, she can attest that a foundation in classical technique has proven to be extremely effective in having the ability to sing/play all genres of music seamlessly.
Maia has had the privilege of studying with a variety of vocal professionals, each with a unique technical method. This experience has honed her ability to discern the differences between various schools of singing and to adapt her teaching to promote vocal health and longevity for each student.
While her approach is technical, her teaching style is always student-centered. She takes an organic approach to singing, focusing on the individual needs of each student. Her lessons cover breath work, resonance, acting, music theory, ear training, sight-reading and posture, with a strong focus on Alexander technique.
Above all, Maia believes the most important thing is to have fun!
